Long Copy Vs. Short Copy

Want to get better at copywriting?

Practice simple short copy.

It will teach you to recognize the core essence of your idea & frame thoughts that are:

1. Memorable: people will recall what you said

2. Impactful: encourage action

3. Concise: can be delivered via mediums like social

Moreover, if you write it such that even a 5th grader can understand it, you'll massively widen the audience.

(tip: use Hemingwayapp.com to test the level you're writing at)

Where do you start?

Emails & landing pages leverage this a lot. Write a few headlines. Get feedback. Iterate.

What's the difference?

Example of long copy:

"Duolingo is an app that will create a tailored language learning program for you that's fun & engaging. It shows a series of MCQ challenges that get progressively harder. Within a few days, you'll feel more confident in your ability to communicate in a new language."

Short:

"Duolingo is an app that helps you learn a new language in days while having fun."

Interestingly, short copy can take much more time (and testing) than longer text.

E.g. even when writing LinkedIn posts, I often go over the character limit forcing me to go on a spree of mini-edits.

So, need oomph in your written communication?

Get better at your short game.
