Every role has its challenges but in the wrong organization, Product Management can be particularly mentally abrasive.
In fact, it can affect how one deals with people in their personal life. One's social etiquette can take a beating when they are constantly:
1. Saying no to people & swordfighting their pushback.
2. Answering 100s of questions a day & making several micro-decisions.
3. Managing pushy stakeholders & making scary commitments.
4. Listening to customer rants without filters.
5. Dealing w/ Impostor syndrome
You start dealing with friends & family like "stakeholders" unnecessarily. Casual conversations turn into arguments etc.
In such situations, you might want to reconsider your employment. But if you plan to stay, here are a few tips:
1. Unplug daily.
Block out 30 mins daily on your calendar to meditate. Isolate & let the brain soak.
WFH? Take a walk outside.
For Muslims, a dhikr schedule works wonders.
2. Use your annual leave in bulk.
Firstly, don't feel guilty leaving your station.
Secondly, don't take 1 or 2 days here & there. You need to dissociate properly to recharge.
3. Talk to a professional.
You don't have to be insane to seek counseling. Sometimes talking about an insecurity makes it easier to navigate.
