How To Communicate A Product Strategy To Your Team?

Q: "How do I communicate a product strategy to my team?"

There's already a ton of great material on the definition of product strategy: Melissa Perri, Roman Pichler & Marty Cagan have shed some vivid light on the topic.

So, with the attached deck, I'll instead focus on a hypothetical example of how a PM can express & share strategy with their team in the form of a presentation.

Let's assume the product is a POS system targeting SMBs (specifically cafes).

Points to remember:

  • Product Strategy is a short-term plan that evolves over time
  • Product Strategy helps with prioritization. It needs to be referenced during backlog grooming, ideation, roadmapping etc.
  • Before moving to execution, it might be helpful in contrasting good-fit and poor-fit initiatives (wrt to the product strategy) to facilitate conversations around prioritization

Disclaimer: The idea here is to share how a strategy doc might look like. The solution specifics & numbers are just illustrative.
