What's the difference between a good product manager & a GREAT one?
I'm still a student myself but here are my observations:
1. Good PMs balance the product's big picture with the minute details.
Great PMs keep an eye on another level i.e. the macro landscape allowing them to pounce on emerging opportunities.
2. Good PMs are great communicators & impart influence by using relatable speech with tech, marketing, sales etc.
Great PMs identify motivational drivers of the team & inspire action. They spread lavish credit.
3. Good PMs write clearly & concisely.
Great PMs are avid copywriters. They are adept at framing fitting headlines, success messages, emails, CTA labels etc. Their specs are just the right length but highly actionable.
4. Good PMs can guide design to make functionally elegant choices.
Great PMs have a nose for stellar UX & can express their vision clearly. They craft journeys that consistently trigger delight.
6. Good PMs plan to optimize metrics across the board.
Great PMs zero in on the few areas that generate the biggest bang for the buck.
7. Good PMs can prioritize epics & sprints well.
Great PMs know exactly when to focus on expansion, dial back to platform scaling, switch to acquisition mode & pivot to building retention moats.
