Can freedom at the workplace be misused?
Let's look at a few situations.
1) A manager only hires people from a specific race, religion or region.
Others call it systemic racism.
The manager defends it by saying they are exercising their freedom to choose.
Others say there is no such thing as freedom of irresponsible choices.
2) A manager promotes only those subordinates that are essentially their blood relations.
Others call it nepotism.
The manager declares it as his/her freedom to operate.
Others say there is no such thing as freedom of irresponsible operation.
3) A manager's pet makes offensive and deriding comments about a co-worker's family causing them pain.
Others call it hate speech.
The manager, however, let's it slide. Firstly, because he/she thinks the person on the receiving end is being overly sensitive and should learn to deal with humor.
Secondly, because he/she supports freedom of speech.
Others respond by saying there is no such thing as freedom of irresponsible speech.
