I was dealing with this customer for our ATS product who had tons of requests related to reports.
Of course, all customers care about tracking performance via numbers & graphs.
However, something was off in this case.
The requests were clearly an overkill.
e.g. they insisted on a pie chart for an object with 100+ values. This produced hyper-thin slices which made it impossible to analyze.
I simply didn't get what kind of insights they'd glean from such an odd visualization.
I dug deeper. Asked questions. Luckily, I stumbled upon what was going on behind the scenes.
The HR team wanted a pretty dashboard that they could just flaunt in an upcoming QBR.
They didn't care if it was legible or useful. It just needed to look sophisticated.
This knowledge allowed me to advise them to produce a dashboard with both substance & style. Something I could offer other customers too.
